How to edit Audio of a video file

Even wondered how those amateur cover songs on youtube or elsewhere sound so good even when the recording was done at home ? Turns out with a few simple tricks anyone can edit their videos to have better sound or even change the audio.

So how do you do it ?

Extract the audio using AVIDEMUX (A free software)

A video file has its audio encoded in a separate stream, so it should not be difficult to separate the steams out. Using avidemux, open the video file and select audio, and then save audio, provide a filename and voila you are done !

Install Goldwave from Goldwave.com

Goldwave is a audio editing software which is pretty good for simple and complex editing of audio files

You can try it out before buying it but the trial version has full features, just that you will be locked out every few operations.

Add effects to your audio

While there are a lot of things you can do to improve the audio quality of your file, one of the simplest things to make it sound professional is to add an echo.

To add an echo navigate to Effects->Echo.

Here you can key in number of echoes and add a delay for each echo. The best numbers are 3 echoes and 0.2 seconds, you can play around with the setting and "pre-hear" it with the play button before you "OK" it.

Select new audio track for the video

Now go back to Avidemux and navigate to Audio->Select track, click the dropdown under "Track 0" and select Add Track. This will open up a new window where you can navigate to the file and select it.

Play it to preview and the new audio should take effect.

Save and you are done !
